ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
The Manager, Business Intelligence and Database Administration, is a highly technical, hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing and executing data visualization and data infrastructure initiatives. This role bridges the gap between business and technology by delivering reliable analytics platforms, ensuring database integrity and performance, and mentoring a small team of BI and data professionals. The incumbent will ensure that the organization leverages accurate, timely, and actionable insights, while maintaining a secure, optimized, and scalable database environment.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Power BI & Analytics Leadership
- Design and Development: Lead the end-to-end design, development, and deployment of Power BI dashboards and reports that translate raw data into actionable business insights.
- Data Modeling: Architect and optimize semantic data models, including tabular and multidimensional models, to support self-service and enterprise-wide reporting needs.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with department leads and executives to understand analytical requirements, define KPIs, and guide the organization’s data visualization strategy.
- Governance & Standards: Establish and enforce governance practices across Power BI datasets, workspaces, and reports to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and security.
- Advanced Analytics: Explore opportunities to enhance Power BI outputs through the integration of predictive analytics, AI/ML, or R/Python for advanced data storytelling.
Database Administration & Operations
- SQL Server Management: Administer, monitor, and optimize Microsoft SQL Server environments, both on-premise and cloud-hosted, ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, and optimal performance.
- Security & Compliance: Implement robust access control, encryption, and data masking strategies in line with privacy regulations and organizational security policies.
- Performance Tuning: Proactively address performance bottlenecks by optimizing queries, indexes, and server configurations.
- Data Integrity: Maintain rigorous data quality and validation processes across systems to ensure that insights are based on accurate and trustworthy information.
- Backup & Recovery: Oversee regular backup procedures, failover mechanisms, and recovery testing to minimize data loss and ensure business continuity.
Team & Project Management
- Hands-on Leadership: Lead by example by actively contributing to development and problem resolution alongside team members while managing overall workloads and deliverables.
- Mentorship & Coaching: Develop the technical and professional capabilities of team members through training, performance feedback, and knowledge sharing.
- Resource Planning: Align team capacity and skillsets to meet project timelines and business objectives; prioritize and delegate tasks effectively.
- Project Oversight: Coordinate with PMO and cross-functional teams to manage timelines, risks, and resource dependencies for BI and data-related initiatives.
- Process Improvement: Define and implement repeatable development, testing, and deployment workflows, introducing automation where feasible.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Experience:
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in Power BI development, including building enterprise dashboards and self-service data solutions.
- Minimum of 5 years managing Microsoft SQL Server environments, including clustering, high availability, disaster recovery, and security.
- At least 2 years of experience in a team leadership or management role with proven ability to mentor and develop direct reports.
- Demonstrated success in balancing project delivery with day-to-day operational responsibilities.
Technical Skills:
- BI Stack: Expert-level knowledge of Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.
- Data Engineering: Proficiency in ETL processes, data pipelines, data warehouse development, and integration with multiple data sources.
- Data Security: Strong understanding of data access control models, row-level security, and role-based permissions within BI tools and databases.
- Scripting & Queries: Advanced skills in T-SQL, DAX, MDX, and query optimization techniques.
- Cloud Technologies: Experience with Azure Data Services (Data Factory, SQL Database, Synapse) is an asset.
- Documentation: Skilled in maintaining comprehensive technical documentation, including data dictionaries, process flows, and solution architectures.
Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with DevOps practices for BI and database deployments, including CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
- Knowledge of data governance frameworks and best practices related to metadata management, data lineage, and data stewardship.
- Experience integrating Power BI with cloud-based platforms (e.g., Dynamics 365).
- Familiarity with Agile delivery methodologies, including Scrum or Kanban.
- Experience in public sector, health, or government-funded environments with heightened privacy and compliance standards
Education:
- University or college diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Analytics, or a related field. Additional certifications in Microsoft data technologies or project management are a strong asset
